Meanwhile, in London, Rocket Padel at Battersea Power Station provides four panoramic indoor courts against one of the capital's most iconic backdrops.
Both venues feature modern facilities and social spaces perfect for post-match networking, ensuring an experience that balances competitive play with community building.
Over 50 years ago, one man’s vision led to the creation of padel – a sport that has become a global phenomenon. Now, Aberdeen Investments is bringing that same spirit of fun, camaraderie and inclusivity to the asset management community with the launch of the Aberdeen Padel League, in association with Citywire.
The league aims to bring together professionals across our industry in a relaxed, social setting, fostering community and strengthening connections beyond traditional business interactions. Competitors will apply the skills they’ve honed professionally – strategic planning, teamwork and adaptability – while connecting with like-minded peers.

Collaborate on and off the court
Home
Inspired by the vision of padel’s creator, Aberdeen Padel League offers a unique opportunity to unwind, build connections, and foster collaboration – both on and off the court.
In 1969, Mexican businessman Enrique Corcuera created a small sports court at his holiday home in Acapulco with a simple vision: to start a game that could be enjoyed by family and friends regardless of skill level or athleticism.
Inspired by his love for tennis and the desire to play in a smaller, more accessible space, Corcuera designed a 10 x 20-metre court enclosed by walls, allowing the ball to bounce off the surfaces, much like squash.
Corcuera’s holiday home became the birthplace of a sport that has evolved into the global phenomenon we know as padel. The sport’s popularity has surged due to its unique appeal: it is easy to learn, fast-paced and social.
‘Enrique Corcuera had a vision – a vision that he brought to life with remarkable success,’ said Xavier Meyer, CEO of Aberdeen Investments. ‘That’s what financial and investment professionals do every day for their clients – they envision their future and craft well-thought-out plans to achieve their goals.’
In a padel match, partners must rely on each other’s strengths and support one another – much like the collaborative nature of managing wealth for clients and making strategic decisions together.
‘That’s what makes padel such a fitting sport for the asset management community,’ added Meyer. ‘And it’s why we’re excited to create our own padel league in association with Citywire. We hope the Aberdeen Padel League will bring our community together with the same spirit of fun, camaraderie, inclusivity, and teamwork that Enrique Corcuera intended.’
Introducing the Aberdeen Padel League
The Aberdeen Padel League has been created to unite professionals across the asset management industry in a relaxed, social setting, fostering a sense of community and strengthening professional connections that extend beyond the office and meeting rooms.
A great opportunity for clients and industry peers to connect and spend time together outside of the typical environment, and hopefully foster deeper, more lasting relationships.
Engaging in team sports like padel boosts morale, enhances wellbeing and increases productivity. The league’s social atmosphere allows professionals to unwind, bond with colleagues and rediscover a sense of balance beyond the office.
‘We all recognise the importance of achieving the right work/life balance,’ said Meyer. ‘Padel is a fantastic recreational sport that promotes fitness, agility and hand-to-eye coordination.
We are running two leagues – one for clients and peers in London, and another in Edinburgh.
Staying true to Corcuera’s original vision, our league is designed to be inclusive, with each venue offering two groups: one for beginners and lower intermediate players, and another for upper intermediate and advanced players.
In London, there will be 16 mixed doubles teams in each group, while in Edinburgh, there will be eight mixed doubles teams per group. Mixed doubles partners who are interested in participating can register their interest now.
Each team will play three times over the course of six weeks, from Thursday 8 May to Thursday 12 June. Matches will take place on alternating weeks, and with the relaxed and fun nature of the league, teams can swap matches with advance notice or have colleagues step in.
Each padel meet will last around three hours: 45-50 minutes of play, one hour with the coach, and another hour afterwards for food, drinks, and networking.
The top teams – eight in London and four in Edinburgh – will take part in the grand finals on Wednesday 18 June when they will compete for a £500 donation to a charity of their choice, a trophy, and most importantly, the honour of being crowned Aberdeen Padel League champions.
